Our approach
It Starts Today Counseling focuses on open communication that is relatable to our youth. IST focuses on a Person-Centered approach, that positions people’s preferences, needs, and values, first. With the increasing struggles of youth anxiety, high expectations, depression, feelings of being judged, and social stigma, we believe in focusing care on the needs of the individual and building confidence.

All your appointments will take place in our new office space, (This is not a stock photo, it is in fact this cozy) right in the heart of downtown Newton. Our environment provides a fully private, clean, comfortable, quaint and quiet place to start and continue your journey.
In-person and remote options
Our office is conveniently located, as mentioned above, in the heart of downtown Newton, NJ. However, we know sometimes you can’t make it into the office! No worries – we’ve got you covered with teletherapy.

Hi, I’m Ben! I have lived in New Jersey my entire life, graduating from Dover High School, where I enjoyed playing varsity basketball throughout my time there. Thanks to some personal experiences in my early years, I always knew I wanted to find a way to help others when I grew up. In pursuit of that passion, I sought a degree in social work from SUNY University, completing my bachelor’s in 20XX. I went on to graduate with honors from Fordham University with a master’s degree in clinical social work.
After graduation, I became a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and pursued a career in child protective services. For the last 15 years, I’ve worked as a community liaison for the Division of Child Protection and Permanency.
My work is incredibly rewarding, but I wanted to do more to help the families I saw struggling to make ends meet, so I founded Benny’s Bodega in 2019. A nonprofit organization that’s entirely volunteer-run, Benny’s Bodega provides a hand-up for families in our own community who need a little extra support in the form of essentials such as food, clothing, and household goods. I’m so proud of this organization and grateful to the many hands that have helped to build it.
Supporting our state’s most vulnerable children and families in myriad ways throughout my career has uniquely prepared me to serve my clients with compassion and understanding. To put all that experience to good use, I launched It Starts Today Counseling. Here, I offer a person-centered approach to talk therapy, which allows my clients to “steer the ship.” I act as your guide, actively listening and engaging in our therapy sessions but empowering you to hold the reins. This enables you to follow your own path to self-discovery as I provide support and direction along the way. My clients find me to be warm, genuine, and relatable.
I have a genuine passion for helping individuals find their way, relying on not just my professional expertise but also my own experiences with adversity. I’m proud to say that I’m also a family man myself. My beautiful wife and I have been married since 2014 and have two wonderful kids.
